Virechana is a doctor-supervised therapeutic purgation from Ayurvedic Panchakarma. After careful preparation, excess Pitta dosha in particular is eliminated through the intestines using herbal purgatives. Virechana is one of the most important Panchakarma treatments, and at Park am See it is carried out only under the direct supervision of our Ayurveda doctors.

Panchakarma refers to a set of Ayurvedic cleansing procedures. At a time when stress, irregular meals and environmental pollution put a strain on the body, more and more people are looking for regular Ayurvedic detox treatments. Virechana is the treatment most people think of first – the term means “therapeutic purgation”.

But Virechana is much more than a few loose motions. The aim of the preparation is to move the vitiated doshas from the various tissues of the body into the Koshta (alimentary canal) so that they can then be eliminated. This preparation should only be done under the direct supervision and regular monitoring of an Ayurveda doctor.

Virechana – Ayurvedic therapeutic purgation in Panchakarma

HOW A VIRECHANA TREATMENT WORKS

1. Assessment and preparation (Purvakarma): First, the doctor assesses your Koshta (nature of the alimentary tract), Agni (digestive power), Prakriti (constitution), Vikriti (current imbalances), Bala (strength) and external factors such as the season. This is followed by Snehana, internal oleation: over several days – usually 3 to 7 – you take medicated ghee. In addition, you receive full-body oil massages (Abhyanga) and Swedana, a warming herbal steam treatment. The doctor continuously assesses how your body responds and chooses the right medicine for the purgation accordingly.

2. The day of Virechana: After the preparation, you are given an individually selected herbal purgative. The elimination takes place over several hours. An experienced medical team is available throughout the day to monitor your condition and guide you step by step.

3. Recovery diet (Samsarjana Krama): After the purgation, digestion is gradually rebuilt – with rice gruel (Peya), thin soups and later simple khichdi. These specially prepared dishes are freshly made in the kitchen of our Restaurant ANADI.

The key point: every one of these steps – from the preparation and the choice of medicine to the first meal afterwards – is customised. The plan for one person can be entirely different from another’s, because it depends on the stage of each individual’s dosha imbalance.

WHAT IS VIRECHANA USED FOR?

In Ayurveda, Virechana is the preferred elimination therapy for an excess of Pitta, the dosha of fire and metabolism. Traditionally, it is used for complaints associated with Pitta – such as certain digestive and skin problems – and preventively as part of a Panchakarma cure. Many guests report lighter digestion, more energy and a clearer mind afterwards. Whether Virechana is right for you is always decided by the doctor after a personal examination.

WHEN VIRECHANA IS NOT SUITABLE

Virechana is an effective medical procedure and is not suitable for everyone. As a rule, it is not carried out during pregnancy, in cases of acute infection or fever, severe weakness or underweight, acute diarrhoea, certain inflammatory bowel diseases, or in children. Never attempt Virechana on your own. Please tell us about any pre-existing conditions and medication before you arrive – after booking, we ask all guests to send us their medical records.

Frequently Asked Questions

Virechana is a doctor-supervised therapeutic purgation from Ayurvedic Panchakarma that eliminates excess Pitta dosha in particular through the intestines. The duration is personalised: an Ayurvedic doctor assesses your digestion and overall condition. Including preparation and recovery, the treatment typically takes 12 to 18 days.

Virechana takes place in stages. It begins with Snehana, internal oleation: you take medicated ghee for 3 to 7 days, complemented by full-body oil massages. This is followed by Swedana, a herbal steam treatment. Once the body is prepared, the actual purgation (Virechana) is carried out with a herbal purgative. Afterwards, a special recovery diet (Samsarjana Krama) gradually rebuilds digestion.

Virechana is classified into four types according to strength and purpose: Anulomana gently regulates bowel movements with mild herbs, Sramsana promotes elimination with natural laxatives, Bhedana is a stronger form for deep cleansing, and Rechana is a purgation with a more general cleansing focus. The Ayurvedic doctor decides which form is suitable based on your constitution, strength and complaints.

During Virechana, the diet is light, warm and easy to digest. Rice gruel (Peya), green gram soup and simple, mildly spiced khichdi are recommended. Hot spices and heavy, oily or processed foods are avoided. After the purgation, the diet is gradually expanded so that the digestive system can regain its strength.

The main Panchakarma therapy for eliminating aggravated Pitta dosha is Virechana. A light, cooling diet of lukewarm, not too heavy meals also helps. Avoid spicy, oily, sour and fermented foods – especially in the evening.

Virechana is generally not carried out during pregnancy, in cases of acute infection or fever, severe weakness, underweight, acute diarrhoea, certain inflammatory bowel diseases, or in children. Virechana should never be done without medical supervision.

For example at Retreat Park am See Nattika in the castle park of Alt Rehse on Lake Tollense (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania). There, Virechana is part of the doctor-supervised Panchakarma cure; a stay of at least 14 nights is recommended.
