Looking for a yoga retreat in Germany that combines peace, nature and genuine regeneration? At Retreat Park am See Nattika in the castle park of Alt Rehse, right on Lake Tollense in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, you practise up to three hours of Hatha yoga, pranayama (breathing exercises) and meditation every day – in a thatched yoga hall or beneath old trees on the lakeshore. Your practice is complemented by doctor-supervised Ayurveda treatments and full Ayurvedic board. The retreat is open all year round and suitable for beginners.

YOGA AND AYURVEDA: TWO SISTER SCIENCES

Yoga and Ayurveda come from the same Vedic tradition of India and are known as sister sciences. The word yoga derives from the Sanskrit root “yuj”, meaning “to join” or “to unite” – the union of body, breath and mind. Ayurveda literally means “knowledge of life” and is associated with the Atharvaveda. While Ayurveda supports health through diet, herbs, treatments and lifestyle, yoga works with posture, breath and attention. Learn more on our Yoga at Park am See page.

The two disciplines complement each other: the Ayurvedic treatments prepare the body, and the yoga practice helps their effects last. This is especially clear during a Panchakarma cure, the classic Ayurvedic cleansing cure, where gentle yoga is a fixed part of the daily routine.

Modern yoga is often equated with physical postures (asanas). Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, however, describe an eight-limbed path (Ashtanga yoga): Yama (ethical conduct towards others), Niyama (self-discipline), Asana (postures), Pranayama (breath control), Pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation) and Samadhi (complete absorption).

YOGA THERAPY: YOGA AS PART OF YOUR TREATMENT

Yoga therapy means tailoring the principles of yoga to an individual – to their constitution, complaints and goals. At Park am See, your yoga programme is therefore put together after your initial medical consultation and coordinated with your Ayurveda treatments. Alongside asanas, it includes breathing exercises, meditation and relaxation.

The effects of yoga are well researched. A meta-analysis (Pascoe et al., 2017) found that yoga can be associated with lower cortisol levels, a lower resting heart rate and lower blood pressure. According to a Cochrane review (Wieland et al., 2022), yoga can slightly improve pain and function in chronic non-specific low back pain. Please note: yoga and Ayurveda do not replace medical treatment. If you have a pre-existing condition or are pregnant, please speak to our team before booking.

THE ROLE OF THE TEACHER (GURU)

The word guru combines the Sanskrit syllables “gu” (darkness) and “ru” (remove) – the guru is the one who dispels darkness. Although yoga can be practised alone, the guidance of an experienced teacher is especially valuable on a retreat. A good teacher looks after your safety and alignment, adapts the exercises to your needs and helps you deepen your practice step by step – from your first asanas to meditation and breathwork. Practising in a group also creates a supportive atmosphere in which you can grow together.

YOGA ON LAKE TOLLENSE: YOUR RETREAT AT PARK AM SEE

The retreat is set in the historic castle park of Alt Rehse, directly on Lake Tollense. The extensive grounds are reserved exclusively for resident guests, so you can practise undisturbed and without day visitors. Sessions take place in the 400 m² thatched yoga hall, in the shade of old trees or right on the lakeshore, where birdsong and rustling leaves accompany your breath. You stay in traditional thatched houses (our rooms) and enjoy vegetarian Ayurvedic cuisine at Restaurant ANADI. You can easily arrive by car or by train via Neubrandenburg station.

A typical day begins with Hatha yoga and pranayama, followed by a warm Ayurvedic breakfast. In the late morning you receive your treatments – around 1 hour 45 minutes in total each day, such as Abhyanga, the Ayurvedic full-body massage with warm oil. Afternoons are for walks by the lake, rest, or workshops on Ayurveda, nutrition and mindfulness; the evening ends with meditation or relaxation.

Depending on your goal, you can combine the daily yoga practice with a matching focus: if you want to release tension before it becomes chronic, our Ayurveda Stress Relief Retreat is the right choice. For deep exhaustion, Ayurveda Burnout Recovery offers gentle yoga instead of pressure to perform. And if you want a holistic cleanse, choose the Ayurveda Detox Retreat.

WHY HATHA YOGA ON A RETREAT?

Hatha yoga is one of the oldest documented forms of physical yoga and the basis of most modern yoga styles. Literally, “hatha” means force or effort; symbolically, the word is often split into “ha” (sun) and “tha” (moon) – an image of balancing active and calm energy. In Hatha classes, each posture is held for several breaths, leaving time to adjust your alignment and breathe consciously. That is why Hatha yoga is ideal for beginners – and it complements oil treatments and a cleansing diet instead of adding strain.

BENEFITS OF HATHA YOGA

Regular asana practice strengthens muscles, joints and the spine and improves flexibility. Pranayama exercises such as alternate nostril breathing (Nadi Shodhana) deepen the breath and help calm the nervous system. Meditation and relaxation techniques such as Yoga Nidra can improve sleep and help you deal with stress more calmly. Many guests tell us that after a few days at the retreat they sleep more soundly, feel more mobile and return to everyday life with greater clarity.
